The Pep Talk You Must Disregard

In response to Wednesday’s blog entry, Best Practice To Live By #11, my mentor Ryan Mace provided some great insight from a life experience he had that clearly illustrates how we must raise our standards if we’re going to achieve greater goals.

The greatest danger is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it’s too low and we reach it!

– Michelangelo

A few months ago I was subjected to a speech from a self-proclaimed motivational speaker. This gentleman proceeded to tell the room that setting goals too high is not realistic and that if the goal isn’t achievable it’s just a dream! Hearing this I could not help but think that this is a recipe for mediocrity and disaster!

Take a moment and think about the greatest performances that you have ever witnessed. Do you think they were the result of what society deemed to be safe, realistic goal setting? Do you think it was the result of someone giving average energy and effort? Moreover, imagine a world where all goals were based upon what we perceived to be achievable at that very moment…

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be average! I will set the bar high! I will put in the energy and effort to make my goals a reality! I will demand more from life, and myself!

Make today better than yesterday, but not as great as tomorrow!

    • I’ve been saying that for years. A compelling vision of who you’ll will yourself to be, coupled with a flexible plan for success and willingness to evaluate/recalculate your steps – the pathway toward success most of us only dream of.

Accept mediocrity and you’ll always be mediocre.

Have a great week and thanks for reading/following my blog. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
